What are Aerobic Exercises and Their Benefits?

In our often sedentary lifestyle, we need a moderate amount of physical activity to keep us fit and healthy. Aerobic exercise, also called cardiovascular ‘cardio’ exercise, is one such form of medium-intensity physical activity. It temporarily increases your breathing and heart rate.

What does aerobic exercise do to the human body?

  • Burns calories quickly
  • Burns body fat
  • Boosts endurance
  • Brings high blood pressure down
  • Decreases risk of diabetes and heart disease
  • Helps ease depression symptoms

In short, it helps in weight loss efforts, and keeps our lungs, heart and circulatory system healthy.

With so many health benefits to offer, this form of exercise is excellent for people who currently do little or no physical activity on a daily basis. Isn’t it?

So what are some of the aerobic exercises you can take up as a beginner? Here are a few suggestions to consider –

  • Brisk walking, jogging, running
  • Hiking
  • Swimming
  • Dancing
  • Kickboxing
  • Cycling

Even if you don’t have any equipment or don’t like going to the gym, you can practice brisk walking in the mornings or join a dance class in the evenings to get your dose of aerobic exercise. About 30 minutes of aerobic exercise per day, 5 days a week is ideal to reap its health benefits. Remember to include a 5 minute warm up before starting, and a 5 minute cool down at the end. You can also speak with your doctor or a fitness expert if you want to work out a more customized routine that suits your health goals.
