A glucometer measures blood glucose levels by utilizing a small sample of blood from a fingertip. The test strip, containing chemicals that react with glucose, is inserted into the meter. When blood is applied, an enzyme on the strip interacts with glucose, producing an electrical current that the meter translates into a blood sugar reading.
