Tackling the problem of water retention

Water retention is the abnormal accumulation of water in the tissues or cavities of the body. The medical term for this is oedema. Water constitutes about 75% of our total body mass. Yet excess water in the body can also be dangerous. Water is retained to harness oxygen and nutrients in it for future use in the body. When you consume fluids, either in the form of water or other food items, the body stores some amount of that water, while the rest is processed by the kidney and the released in the form of urine.

But, sometimes it stores more water than required. Usually, water retention doesn’t have any dangerous effects. However, at times, it can become the cause of heart failures, kidney failure, cirrhosis of the liver etc. Therefore, to avoid water retention problems, we have listed down some foods that you should and should not consume.


First, let’s look at what you should stay clear of. These are the food items that aid water retention:

  • Sugary foods and drinks, especially carbonated sodas
  • Dairy Products
  • Starchy foods, especially processed starch such as pasta, breads, cereals etc.
  • Processed foods
  • Coffee and black tea

No, we don’t suggest that you avoid these foods entirely. But, if you feel bloated or if you’ve had to deal water retention problems earlier, we advise you to consume less of these foods and more of what we mention below.
