Beer belly. Love handle. Muffin top. Pot belly.
Whatever name you give to the spare tire around your waist, you know that you need to get rid of it. Now.
If you are a woman with a waist size more than 35 inches or a man with waist more than 40 inches, it should be a cause for concern. Even if you are not apparently obese or seriously overweight.
Major portion of belly fat is hidden deep inside your body, around your internal organs, in amounts more than you would care to have. And it makes you prone to diseases like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, cardiovascular diseases and even some types of cancer.
Maintain a Food Journal
How many times have you told yourself that you are going to mind what you eat from tomorrow? Well, don’t cheat yourself anymore. Start a food journal.
When you see in black and white what you have eaten, it will be easier for you to identify calorie laden foods and reduce their intake.
Stop Eating Junk Food
Fat around your waist is one of the most difficult one to melt. If you eat junk food like chips, burger and cola, or lead a sedentary lifestyle, your muscle mass decreases. And nothing in your body, or for that matter this universe, can vanish; it just changes its form.
The muscle degenerates into fat, which has a tendency to accumulate around your waist, say Mayo Clinic experts.
Get Off the Couch to Burn Calories
Whatever diet you follow, whatever exercise regimen you adopt, the underlining fact is that you need to burn more calories than you eat, to lose fat. So get off the couch and get moving. Every small movement you add to your routine burns more calories.
Take stairs rather than the lift, cycle to the office or walk down to the neighborhood market rather than take your car. These small changes will go a long way in making you fitter.
Build Up Your Muscles
Muscles burn calories. Go ahead and start building your muscles. And don’t shy away because you are a woman.
Building muscles does not mean building six pack abs. It means having healthy toned muscles that do some work rather than lie uselessly and degenerate.
Eat lots of proteins and exercise at least one set of muscles every day to achieve your goal.
Whatever you do, remember that slow and steady wins the race. So start small – make one change in your lifestyle at a time, stick to it, and when it becomes a habit, introduce the next change.
