Learn more about and understand diabetes

There are three types of Diabetes, Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes. The most common type of diabetes from which most people suffer is Type 2, where-in the body does not make or use the required amount of insulin and thus, cannot absorb sugar from the foods to generate energy. Type 2 Diabetes can be managed by regular intake of medicines, medical care, and lifestyle management.

 

Understand the basic indicators of Diabetes

The A1C blood test, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol are the most important indicators or the ABCs of Diabetes. Every patient should understand and know the goals for their A1C blood test, their blood pressure, and their Cholesterol, and should undergo routine tests to check if the results meet their goals.

 

Make changes in your lifestyle

Diabetes is not a disease which can be taken lightly – one should understand the seriousness and make strict changes in their lifestyle to live a better, healthier life. Some major changes include:

  • Regulated Diet – Eat more fresh fruits and whole vegetables to obtain more dietary fibre in your diet and cut down on calories, trans fats, sugar, salt, and unsaturated fats. Increase water intake, quit smoking and check with your doctor regarding alcohol intake.
  • Physical Activity – Set a goal for physical activity which includes light physical activity like yoga or walking on all days, and moderate physical activities like push-ups, stretching, etc. on alternate days.
  • Regular Medication – Be particular about your medication, and assure that you never miss a dose of medicine.

 

Get routine Care

Stay in touch with your doctor at regular intervals, and keep him updated about changes in your body and your lifestyle. Most importantly, be honest with your doctor.
